Maintaining Your Polished Concretes Quality

By Mikkan Drane

Yes, you've done it! Your floor looks amazing! But wait, are you not forgetting something? Although concrete polished floor are said to be highly durable and strong, it will still need to be cared for and maintained. Because face it, strength alone wont work, especially when you're abusing it.

Maintenance is easy but the first thing to consider is the quality of your concrete polished floor. It should be assured that the floor is properly sealed after it had been polished. An epoxy sealer which is very easy to apply and very cost effective could be used to it. This serves as fillers for the gaps and cracks that the floor could have over time of use.

After the sealing process and the coloring options are done, whats left to do is to simply maintain regularly the cleanliness of the polished concrete. This includes typical application of floor polishes, and standard replacement of surface sealer. Applications vary as well depending on the contribution of the concrete surface and its risk of slipping when wet.

By keeping your floor clean and dry, you are helping it in keeping that slip resistance attribute that everyone wants from a concrete polished floor. Contamination is one of the major contributor in making concrete polished floor slippery, so making sure your floor is free from contaminants will help greatly.

The regular application of floor polish helps in filling the surfaces roughness that provides that grip or friction required for that much desired slip resistance. However, if your floors finish has quite a low surface roughness, you should lessen the layers of polish on the concrete as too much of it could reduce the slip resistance quite significantly. Whats important here is the awareness as to what your concrete requires what suits its maintenance needs.
