Tankless Water Heaters - A Very Educated Decision

By Kenny Jacobs

Everyone needs to save money these days. Did you know that hot water costs represent 25% of the total energy costs for your home? Here are some advantages for changing your hot water heater to a tankless system - and they are not only about saving money.

ADVANTAGE 1: A tank hot water heater is continually losing heat and switching on to reheat, using extra power. A tankless water heater will save you about $50 a month because it only turns on when you want to use hot water. Small family households will notice a bigger saving in power costs because they generally use less hot water than larger households.

2. Tankless hot water heaters never run out of hot water - one of the most common complaints about a tank water heater. There are even tankless heaters that can run two showers at once.

Advantage #3: tankless hot water heaters are much more energy efficient than tank systems, which are 40% - 65% efficient. By comparison, a tankless gas water heater is 80% energy efficient while an electric tankless heater has an 95% energy efficiency rating.

ADVANTAGE 4: Tankless water heaters are versatile. They are smaller than conventional water heaters and take up much less space. There are models that can be installed in boats, mobile homes, RVs, office kitchenettes and washrooms. If large volume is required, there are models that are suited to hotels, apartment and industrial buildings and carwashes.

Advantage #5: hot water from a tankless water system is instantaneous which means there is no wastage while waiting for the water to heat up. There is no limit to the time or amount of hot water you have with a tankless water heater; it never runs out and runs at a constant temperature for however long you need it.

Advantage #6: a tankless hot water heater will last more than 20 years. The system may cost more to buy and install but you will save more than the difference in power, within 6 to 7 years.

ADVANTAGE 7: A water heater that uses a tank is subject to leaking, rusting, dripping hot water from faucets, explosion because the tank is under pressure and limited hot water. There are none of these issues with a tankless water heater.

ADVANTAGE 8: Tankless hot water heaters are available for connection to your preferred power source. They are manufactured for both gas and electricity; the choice is yours.

9. The water in a hot water tank can be a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Because there is no stored water in a tankless system, the water quality will be much better.

Advantage #10: as the demand for tankless water heaters increases there will be more choice and features, as well as more competitive prices.
