Helpful Hints On Raising A Pomeranian Rescue Dog

By Rosie Allan

When you make that decision to give a Pomeranian rescue dog a second chance in life you are doing a wonderful thing and you should be commended for it. No pet should have to suffer and every pet should have a chance at a good life with a family that loves and cares for it. Like any other animal that has been rescued from abuse, a Pomeranian is going to have some quirks and things about it that you are going to have to deal with early on. Be patient, the little dog has been through a lot.

Sometimes the rescue shelter will tell you that their vet has already looked the dog over but it is always a good idea to get your own vet to look the dog over as well and as soon as possible. You never know what an abused animal has been through plus you will want to introduce your new vet and your new pet as soon as you can so your vet can get to know your dog and help with any questions you may have.

Pomeranians love to bark and a well-adjusted Pomeranian will bark and bark at anything that moves or anything that startles them, whether there is something there or not. A Pomeranian rescue dog will more than likely be barking a lot and it is just something you are going to have to work with the dog on to get them to stop. A firm and consistent method, without being mean or abusive, of reminding the dog that barking is not necessary should work over time but you will need to be patient and continue to work with the dog.

Housebreaking is always a challenge with any of the toy breeds and a Pomeranian is no different. A well-adjusted Pomeranian can take quite a while to housebreak and some owners report that in the end it does not work on every dog. Start with standard housebreaking methods. If your dog is already housebroken it will take to the training right away and you should be fine. If it is not housebroken then be patient and keep working with your dog. Remember that housebreaking a Pomeranian takes time so be patient.

In the world of the toy breeds of dog the Pomeranian is known for its pompous attitude and its high intelligence. When you first get your Pomeranian rescue dog you may notice that it is very reserved and possibly quite defensive.

Many breeds never forget their trauma but a Pomeranian will more than likely realize that it is in a better place and should begin to display a whole range of personality traits you never knew it had.

Never punish your Pomeranian rescue dog. They have been through enough and they do not take to punishment well at all anyways. Always use positive reinforcement and a lot of patience. Show your dog that it is loved and it will give you back that love for years to come.

Always use positive reinforcement and never punish the dog as it has been through enough and punishment makes a Pomeranian more obnoxious anyways. So enjoy your new dog and they should bring you love and happiness for years.
