By Ron C George

Fad diets are diets designed to be used for a small amount of time. Another popular culture meaning for the term is a diet that becomes wildly popular for a period of a few months to a few years, and then fades into obscurity. Some of these fad diets include the cabbage soup diet, the Atkins diet, and the cookie diet.

Food Faddism is another name given to these fad diets. A food fad is a phenomenon in which some food or category of food all of a sudden becomes very prevalent. These all have two things in common:

- The food is attributed with miraculous properties. - Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do unpleasant things.

As an instance of these fundamentals of fad diets in the diet, take the Atkins diet. In this diet carbohydrates are the Keystone component that is negative and as a result to be avoided. Low carbohydrates are extremely desirous in Atkins, because it follows that the body enters a super fat burning state. This diet even included short periods, followed by sustained phases. But Dr. Atkins did intend that persons could eat this way for the rest of their lives.

Truth About Fad Diets

How All Fad Diets Become Popular as with a lot of have diets, Atkins popularity was extreme and short-lived. For a number of years anyone who thought of dieting thought about the Atkins diet . People from Hollywood actors to politicians were all going on the Atkins diet. When Dr. Atkins died to super stardom of his diet went with him.

Pros And Cons Of Fad Diets

Fad diets can be unhealthy. The Subway diet made widespread in television commercials wasn't exempt. At its center was a young guy named Jarred who had lost hundreds of pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches. In reality Jarred reduced his caloric intake from over 10,000 calories a day to only 900. Doctors have the same opinion that weight loss on that scale isn't healthy. The diet did contain many positive things such as exercise, like walking.

Handle fad diets with caution. You're better off researching how to eat well on an everyday basis and continue with a program of rigorous exercise.
